On 29 February 1948 Lehi mined the Cairo to Haifa express near Rehovot as it carried British troops north. Twenty-eight soldiers were killed and 35 injured. On 31 March a second Lehi mine, near Binyamina, derailed the same service and killed 40 people, most of them Arab civilians. A third attack in August, after the British had gone, killed 24.
