Is it older than Israel?

Between 1937 and the declaration of the state in May 1948, the Irgun and Lehi, and at times the Haganah and its strike force the Palmach, carried out a campaign of bombings, assassinations and raids against Palestinians, the British and, on occasion, Jews. It began with the Irgun's market bombs of 1937 and 1938, took in the Patria, the killing of Lord Moyne, the King David Hotel, the hanging of the sergeants, and ended in the village massacres of the spring of 1948.

The British administration used the word terrorism for it throughout. So, for the Irgun and Lehi, did the Jewish Agency, until the two were folded into the Israel Defense Forces in 1948. Two of their commanders, Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, later became prime ministers of Israel.
