Is it older than Israel?

In July 1947 the Irgun kidnapped two British sergeants, Clifford Martin and Mervyn Paice, in Netanya, and held them as hostages against the execution of three Irgun members sentenced to death for the Acre prison break. The three were hanged on 29 July. The Irgun hanged the sergeants the same day in a eucalyptus grove outside Netanya and booby-trapped the bodies; an officer who cut one down was wounded by the mine.

The photographs went round the world. There were antisemitic riots in Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, and the affair did much to persuade Britain to give up the Mandate, which it referred to the United Nations that year.
