The Palmach took the village on 1 May 1948; dozens of prisoners were shot afterwards.
Ein al-Zeitun was a village of about 800 people just north of Safad. The Palmach took it on 1 May 1948, thirteen days before the declaration. The village was emptied and its houses blown up.
Around 70 prisoners, according to accounts gathered by Morris and by the Israeli writer Netiva Ben-Yehuda, who was there, were taken into a ravine and shot in the days that followed. Ben-Yehuda described it in her 1985 novel 1948: Between Calendars. The village site is a picnic ground.
