Is it older than Israel?

Al-Dawayima was a large village in the Hebron hills. On 29 October 1948, during Operation Yoav, the 89th Battalion took it without a fight; most of the fighting men had left. What followed was described by a soldier who was there in a letter to the newspaper Al HaMishmar, and then investigated by the army and by the government.

The soldier described children killed by having their skulls broken, women and old men shot in the mosque and in houses that were then blown up, and prisoners killed on the roads. The army's inquiry, cited by Benny Morris, put the dead at 80 to 100. The village's own count is higher. The inquiry's file was closed and no one was tried.
